Rihanna: Evolution of a Style Icon

Whether you remember her from her hit songs such as SOS, Umbrella, Unfaithful or most recently, FourFiveSeconds, Rihanna has certainly paved the way for many acts to follow. Born Robyn Rihanna Fenty, Rihanna has been able to both acquire and maintain a few musical accolades throughout her career. But just because she has a range in vocals, does not mean that singing is the only thing she is great at.

Like most celebrities, Rihanna exudes personal style that is young, fresh and sometimes also, controversial. However through these transitions, Rihanna is able to keep the world guessing about what she will wear next.

The singer’s first step into the realm of fashion started with Armani when her 2010 song “Skin” was used in the Armani Jeans and Emporio Armani Underwear ads. In 2013, Rihanna presented her first women’s spring fashion collection at London Fashion Week for British street fashion brand River Island. In December of that same year, Rihanna was then named the face of coveted French fashion house Balmain.

Though most celebrities face hard times throughout their career, Rihanna has the ability to constantly keep their fans in mind. Growing up in Barbados, though life may not have been easy or luxurious, Rihanna knows the levels in which hard work and dedication can take her. That’s why in 2014, the world got to see her hard work pay off when she received the Fashion Icon Award at the Council of Fashion Designers of America Fashion Awards.

The road to success and reach new heights only continued when she became the new creative director for Puma, overseeing the brand’s women’s line that includes collaborations in apparel and footwear. Alongside the multi-year partnership with Puma, Rihanna has been working to design and customize Puma styles as well as create new styles to add to the Puma product portfolio. Upon this, Rihanna made history by being the first black woman ever chosen as the new face of Dior.

Another fashion endeavor that the multitalented singer dived into is a multi-year partnership with Stance, where she designs signature women’s collection of socks. It is no secret that celebrities are usually a source of inspiration as they are unique in their own way and style. Sometimes they have the tendency to emulate styles in a manner in which others follow.

Rihanna is a perfect style icon because of her ambiance, individuality and ability to take risks—even when no one else does. She constantly is working to expand her empire and fashion brand. But of course, let’s not forget that she is also a philanthropist at heart when she created her Believe Foundation to help terminally ill children or the time when she helped design clothing for the H&M Fashion Against AIDS line.

Most recently, Rihanna has launched her own fashion, styling and beauty agency called Fr8me with managing partner Benoit Demouy. The LA based firm will represent makeup artists, hairstylists, manicurists and stylists looking to book commercials, editorial shoots, campaigns and red carpet appearances.

“Hair, makeup, and styling play an important role in creativity. I am very involved with that part of my process, so this agency was an organic thing for me to do,” according to Global Grind.

With the release of her long-awaited eighth studio album ANTI approaching to even the possibility of presenting her Puma collaboration at New York Fashion Week next year, there is so much to anticipate Rihanna to do. Another admirable thing about the consecutive Grammy award winner is her ability to keep the world guessing what she will do next.
